Students used data from the Sheetz chain of gas station and convenience stores to analyze the time profile of demand for Made to Order food products at Sheetz locations. The primary goal was to help Sheetz optimize its hiring of workers over time. The analysis identified systematic patterns in sales in terms of seasonality, day of the week, and hour of the day. The students developed a forecasting model that can allow predicting sales of MTO products in a given hour of a given day, with implications for hiring needs. The suite of skills needed to perform sales forecasting, developed by the students during this project, is valuable to a wide range of employers.
